Octopus Coloring Contest
All MCLS branches during March - Show off your creativity in our county wide coloring contest. The coloring sheet was kindly provided by artist Marjorie Sarnat. You can pick up a coloring sheet at any Monroe County Library branch and let the art inspire you. You can return your completed coloring page to any MCLS branch from March 1st-31st. Please make sure your name, phone number, and email address are on the back of your returned sheet. Winners will be announced by April 11th. Submissions may be displayed online or in the library. Only one entry per person and you may only use the provided coloring sheet.
Tentacle Threads: Crochet an Octopus

Join us for a fun and creative crochet workshop where you’ll learn how to make your very own adorable crochet octopus! This hands-on session will guide you through the process of crocheting a soft, squishy octopus that you can proudly display or give as a gift. This program is designed for those with basic crochet skills. Participants should be familiar with basic crochet techniques. Registration is required.

Are you smarter than an octopus? Octopuses are really good at puzzles and escaping their enclosures. Test your skills in our aquarium themed escape room to see if you have what it takes to escape the aquarium before the custodian finds you in there after hours. This escape room accommodates up to eight people per session. If your group is not a full eight people, others may register to join you. For children (ages eight and up) and adults. Please note children may need an adult to help them as some clues may be more difficult than others. You must register for the specific time slot that you want to attend. Register at mymcls.com

John Hartig, Rediscovering Our Wild Side Through the Great Lakes Way

The Great Lakes Way is a necklace of greenways and water trails stretching from Port Huron on southern Lake Huron to Toledo on western Lake Erie. It will reconnect people to the outdoors, help rediscover amazing wildlife living right in their backyard, support healthful living, and foster economic development. John Hartig serves as a Visiting Scholar at University of Windsor’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research and on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. For 14 years he served as Refuge Manager for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Man's best friend? Animal companions in prehistory

Dr. Ken Mohney, Professor of Anthropology, will present on the history of human interaction with companion animals, primarily dogs, and incudes discussion of the earliest evidence of dog domestication and the role of dogs in earlier human communities.

Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Tour

Come and learn about the USA’s only International Wildlife Refuge and the last undeveloped mile of the Detroit River. The Refuge Gateway and Humbug Marsh units, including the John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center are located at 5437 West Jefferson Avenue, Trenton, Michigan 48183. Look for the brown wayfinding signs on I-75.
